NORTHERN COLLEGE
|
|
|
Northern College is a residential college set in its own magnificent buildings
and grounds. It is dedicated to the education and training of men and women who
are without formal qualifications and are seeking to return to learning
|
As part of the project the college is undertaking outreach work, within the
communities formerly based on the mining industry to train groups in scanning
images, incorporating them into a database and using the material as part of a
web site or PowerPoint presentation.

BARNSLEY ARCHIVES AND LOCAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT
|

|
Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Archives and Local Studies Department
collects and preserves historical records relating to the Metropolitan Borough
of Barnsley. We also collect published material on Barnsley and the rest of
South and West Yorkshire. All records and materials are available for study by
members of the public.
|
|
The Archives and Local Studies Department currently holds a photographic
collection of approximately 13,000 photographs. As a partner of this project,
6000 of these photographs will be digitised and made more widely available to
the public through the Internet.

BARNSLEY COLLEGE
|
Barnsley College’s contribution to this
project has involved working with local history and heritage groups throughout
the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough.
Training sessions have been offered at a variety of locations in the area,
especially at branch libraries and community centres.
|
Local history groups took part in our Coalfields
Heritage Exhibition during Feb/March 2003. The exhibition generated much
interest in the work of the history groups and the Engaging the Communities
project.
College staff have organised group visits to National Coal Mining Museum of
England for the purpose of identifying artefacts and images from the
collections
|
| This training has focussed on the creation of digital
archives for each group, scanning documents and photographs and producing this
onto CD Rom. |
|
|
A Memorabilia Day took place at Great Houghton Welfare Hall where we supported
learners with family and local history research using ICT and the Internet.

THE NATIONAL COAL MINING MUSEUM FOR ENGLAND
|
|
The National Coal Mining Museum for England is the Museum of the
English coalfields. It collects, preserves, displays and interprets whatever
relates to the coal industry in England |
The Museum aims to advance the education of the public in the
history of coal mining in England by the provision and maintenance of a museum
both underground and on the surface at the former Caphouse and Hope Pit
collieries. It shows past and contemporary mining methods and exhibits
machinery and other items connected with coal mining and coal mining
communities.
| The Museum's collections range from photographs, fine art, and
social history to large-scale industrial machinery on display in the galleries.
A research library focusing on all aspects of coal mining and mining
communities is available to the public.
|
 |
Our role as a partner in this project was to supply 400 images of collections
and photographs. These images will supplement the web site to tell a more
complete story of coal mining in South and West Yorkshire. As part of the
project the Museum’s Education Outreach Officer has worked with local
history groups, and arranged special visits for them to view the Museum’s
collections
